A shared database cannot resolve a disagreement the organization has refused to own.
The slogan hides the work
Organizations declare a CRM, ERP, warehouse, or master-data platform the single source of truth. Competing spreadsheets and reports continue because users do not trust the records or share the definitions.
The technology can centralize values. It cannot decide which business meaning should prevail.
Truth has several owners
Every important data domain needs ownership for meaning, quality, access, lifecycle, and the decisions that create or change a record. Technical stewardship alone is insufficient.
When definitions conflict, an accountable business owner must resolve the tradeoff. Otherwise, every team preserves its local truth and the central system becomes another opinion.
A source becomes trustworthy when someone is accountable for what its truth means.
Make quality operational
Define the conditions that make the data fit for a decision: completeness, timeliness, provenance, consistency, and acceptable uncertainty. Monitor those conditions where work occurs.
A quality dashboard without remediation authority merely reports distrust. Ownership must include the ability to change process and policy upstream.
Earn the source of truth
Reduce duplicate capture, expose provenance, document definitions, and give users a visible path to challenge incorrect records. Trust grows through correction, not declaration.
One source of truth still needs one owner—or, more precisely, a clear ownership system that makes truth governable.
